Mr. Stephen Gilbert is an experienced and highly regarded plastic surgeon operating in Auckland, New Zealand. For two years he was registrar to Sir William Manchester, a knight of plastic surgery trained by the famous war time practitioners, Sir Harold Gillies and Sir Archibald MacIndoe. All three plastic surgeons were trend setters in cosmetic surgery during peace time. Sir William also trained with Mr. Stephen Gilbert’s father and was Mr. Stephen Gilbert’s mentor at the Middlemore Plastic Surgical Unit. This makes Mr. Stephen Gilbert a direct, plastic surgical descendant of some of the world’s greatest surgeons.
Mr. Stephen Gilbert was born in Christchurch New Zealand and graduated with a bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB ChB) from Medical School at the University of Otago. He has a Fellowship in Surgery from the Royal College of Surgery of England (FRCS) and a Fellowship to Plastic Surgery from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is now the founding co-director of The New Zealand Institute of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, the Medical Director of Prescription Skin Care, Honorary Consultant Plastic Surgeon to Middlemore Hospital and the owner of his own private Plastic Surgery practice.
Following study and training in Britain, France, America, Brazil, Sweden and most recently, Switzerland, Mr. Stephen Gilbert is an expert in cosmetic surgery. For many years he has worked to bring a quality to his services often found to be lacking in other cosmetic surgeries in Auckland. Impressively, Mr. Stephen Gilbert is actually responsible for the introduction of liposuction to New Zealand in 1981, the very same year the technique was first demonstrated in The United States. Mr. Stephen Gilbert was also the first surgeon to carry out lattisimus dorsi and TRAM flap breast reconstruction surgery in New Zealand, fundamental techniques for breast reconstruction.
Such an extensive, history in plastic surgery means Mr. Stephen Gilbert not only has an incredible portion of cosmetic surgery expertise, but also the knowledge, perfection and skill of application that can only be learnt by experience. Despite these wide ranging talents, there are a number of particular areas in which Mr. Stephen Gilbert can identify himself as an industry leader. Worth noting is Mr. Stephen Gilbert’s experience in reconstructing facial features damaged by force or fire. This has lead to his greatly enhanced technical ability in facial cosmetic procedures.

As a facelift surgeon, Mr. Stephen Gilbert is skilled in his ability to provide almost any form of facial, cosmetic alteration of the soft tissues. Strongly believing in the importance of achieving a natural, youthful appearance; Mr. Stephen Gilbert specialises in the application of endoscopic brow lifts and blepharoplasty, as well as neck and face lifts. His practice also uses dermal fillers, facial peels and laser enhancement as part of its skin care programme, offering non-invasive treatments alongside facelift surgery, through his subsidiary Prescription Skin Care.
Mr. Stephen Gilbert is an expert in all modern forms of facial treatment, including both surgical and non surgical means of augmenting the face. Using the latest in facial restoration treatments, most of which are based on sculpting a face by repositioning the gravity affected soft tissue (SMAS). Small amounts of fat can be added to fine tune the facial shape into a more youthful appearance. When performed correctly, most of this fat will retain its position, while a fine layer placed under the skin enhances its ability to rejuvenate itself. This is a result of ‘the stem cell effect.’
Specialising in rhinoplasty, or cosmetic nose surgery, Mr. Stephen Gilbert has also played a role in building an intensive skin care program and is knowledgeable in the application of dermal fillers, facial peels and laser treatments. Mr. Stephen Gilbert is also skilled in performing neck lifts, which are typically performed alongside a lower face lift to maximise the benefit experienced by skin beneath the chin.
Body Contouring and Liposuction
Liposuction has advanced greatly since Mr. Stephen Gilbert’s introduction of the surgery to New Zealand, now incorporating ultrasound technology to improve disproportions in fat distribution. Liposuction is also a valuable tool to Mr. Stephen Gilbert as a facelift surgeon, and is often used to reduce unwanted deposits around the neck and cheeks but adding fat to give a more youthful contour is the latest trend. He has found that the combination of abdominoplasty and almost circumferential liposuction (Lipoabdominoplasty) can tighten and strengthen the abdomen, narrow the waist and even strengthen the back.
Breast Augmentation and Breast Reconstruction
Having visited Per Heden, a Swedish surgeon who has the most cohesive breast gel implant experience worldwide, Mr. Stephen Gilbert is a very experienced breast surgeon, using only soft, high quality breast implants. He is also talented at performing breast reconstruction in post-mastectomy patients and breast reduction in others. Specific attention is paid to short scar techniques in order to minimise visible scarring following treatment.
All forms of breast surgery pay particular attention to the importance of minimum scarring techniques to improve the natural appearance of a patient’s breasts.
